Color of the wind

pocahontas

Hi friends,

Let’s sip a cup of coffee. Slightly sit down, read this lyric of Color of the wind slowly and leisurely discuss with me.

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they’re worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high does the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you’ll never know
And you’ll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still
All you’ll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind

Like a lot of people may, I love Pocahontas’s soul. She has a sensitive soul. That’s why she can feel the Earth, each tree, each rock, creature, and so often, she feels the breath of the wind. She’s friends with 02 little animals Miko and the little green woodpecker. She is the only one in the village who contacts with Granny Willow – a Forest Fairy, also represents her inner spirit; every time she talks to Willow is talking to herself. She loves to row her boat down the spring, dissolving herself in Mother Nature, and adventurously “waiting for what’s around the river bend”. She’s special, out of all the other villages, her best friend Nakoma, her Father, Kokoum – who was supposed to marry Pocahontas, always too serious and stiff; he doesn’t seem to have a loving spirit, he survives, and works or in the movie, fights, to the limit people expect him to be. His life seems to be a setup, in how he lives, how he’s gonna marry with a girl, how he’s arranged to be the Chief after the marriage. By all that, he can never have Pocahontas’s such free spirit. She at all doesn’t enjoy a setup, since to her,

“To be safe, we lose our chance of ever knowing
What’s around the river bend”
and she did pick the CALL inside her, something behind the river bend, as she herself is an adventurous and free young wild girl. What she:

“love most about rivers is:
You can’t step in the same river twice
The water’s always changing, always flowing
But people, I guess, can’t live like that”

Opposite to Kokoum, it’s John who conquered Pocahontas’s heart. Although he does have some goof (no one’s perfect), he’s smart, fun, kind and lively. Plus, he’s a total new wind from that modern London to this savage village, and to Pocahontas. (OK, it’s quite bitter that people do love NEW things! I will discuss about this in another post). He’s the kind of guy who would risk himself for his love. Just like Pocahontas, he goes a new path. He’s different and stands out from all those gold diggers who come from that further modernized land. He listens to his heart, somehow, he knows that he belongs to nowhere; the only place he relies on is his heart. At this point he and Pocahontas exactly share the same thing. That makes them both more human and more mindful about their lives and their souls.

John’s goof? The song Color of the wind above is how Pocahontas explained to him about his blindness of living. When we grow up to some certain extent, we often think that we understand everything of the universe, not to mention those “savages” who still remain the tribal lifestyle, surely they are misty and need to be “improved”. We see the world as ones on the top looking down to others as if people were all lousy but ourselves. We make the right decision. We are pretty. We are best. We are right all the time. We are better. We are more innovated.

Maybe it is not spoken out, but from inside, we haughtily think we are the elite; we tend to debate if someone comments our negative sides, or at least, defend ourselves in those cases. We label us preponderant, while marking the others low quality.

In fact, the lousy ones are possibly us, just to mention that arrogance itself.

To live is to learn constantly. Once we close all the door of the awareness of things around us, our minds immediately become small yet shallow, and less sympathized. World is not just that what we knew about. Like Pocahontas sings:

“But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew”

Footsteps of a stranger. That is so important. To avoid us from labeling and putting prejudice on someone or something. If we’ve got prejudice, we see things through a distorted filter, filter of bias. And things won’t appear as right as it is. The less biased we are, the better we see things thoroughly on its all aspects, and deeply.

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they’re worth

And for once, don’t wonder what things are worth to you like John and the other men come for the gold. Let’s live it to the fullest. Listen to your heart gently. Experience and learn like a hunger. Add in your craziness. Then you’ll see how amazing this life has been to us.

  4. I leave a leave a response whenever I like a article on a site or
I have something to valuable to contribute
to the discussion. Usually it is a result of the sincerness communicated in the post I looked at.
And after this article Color of the wind – Truc Vien's blog.
I was actually moved enough to drop a thought :
-) I do have a few questions for you if you tend not to mind.

Is it just me or does it give the impression like some of the responses come
across like they are left by brain dead people? :
-P And, if you are posting on additional places, I’d
like to keep up with everything fresh you have to post.
Could you make a list every one of your communal sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page
    or twitter feed?
